Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is a day of commemoration and service in the US, when Americans are called up to volunteer on the holiday. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have had four weeks off work, without pay, or days on which they have been called in to work, but still without pay. The shutdown has seen volunteers stepping in to provide meals in Washington DC with federal workers joining both sides of the kitchen counter. On weekdays, the lines have stretched around the block. On this MLK day, there are volunteers who were queuing up for their own meal the week before.
