The gunman, Chérif Chekatt, who killed three people at a Christmas market in Strasbourg, was shot dead by French police on Thursday. The propaganda wing of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group claimed him as one of its "soldiers" but offered no evidence. The perpetrator of the attack in the city of Strasbourg ... "is one of the soldiers of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target nationals of the coalition" against IS, its Amaq propaganda arm said in a message posted on Twitter. The IS claim follows a similar template the group often uses, according to FRANCE 24’s jihadism expert Wassim Nasr. “It shows that [Chekatt] didn’t have real organisational links with the group, meaning he didn’t have a budget to make this attack. He didn’t have help getting arms. He didn’t benefit from a real web or sleeper cell."
