The annual World Economic Forum has kicked off in Davos, against a bleak backdrop of increasing pessimism over global growth, trade disputes and Brexit. This year's gathering of business and political elites is also marked by the notable absence of some key figures, with the leaders of the US, UK and France all skipping the event to deal with issues at home.
