People across Senegal are reacting with shock to the news that a deadly fire engulfed a canoe carrying migrants bound for the Canary Islands in the waters off of M’bour, Senegal on October 23. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, but survivors say the number of casualties is much higher and may reach over 100. Those on board were among the rising number of Senegalese making a desperate attempt to reach the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain and are considered a gateway to Europe. Our Observer met survivors, who were rescued by the Senegalese navy and fishermen.
