French President Emmanuel Macron is on an official visit to the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. In November, the people of this Pacific archipelago will vote in a referendum on whether to cut ties with Paris. Calls for independence go back decades, and lie rooted in the deep inequality that continues to exist between the native Kanak people and the Europeans.
